How is Apple TV’s Foundation, a visually spectacular adaptation of one of the most famous science fiction series of all time, somehow one of the least talked-about shows on television? A refresher course: Foundation is set in a distant future where the Galactic Empire is ruled by a Genetic Dynasty of cloned emperors. Here’s hoping this isn’t curtains for The Great, a show that never stops reinventing itself.- A.W. The season finale, dense with hard-won victories and character catharsis, feels almost like a series finale. Then, midway through the season, a devastating twist topples the whole apple cart, leading The Great to show its most tender and earnest face yet. Huzzah! In its third season, The Great clobbers Catherine with personal challenges and threats to her tenuous power-but through it all, the show remains as delightfully violent and vulgar as ever. Oh, and there are a few additional problems: she neglected to kill Peter, she’s pregnant with the heir to the throne, and much to her frustration, she can’t help but love Peter against her better judgment. Season Three of Hulu’s “occasionally true” comedy about Catherine the Great finds the monarch in a sticky situation: having wrestled the throne from her incompetent husband Peter, she’s determined to improve life for working class Russians, but her vision of progress might just cause class warfare. It’s all a sensational send-off for this beloved series about art, ambition, and female friendship.- Adrienne Westenfeld Season Five narrows the gap between these two timelines until, in the electrifying series finale, we get a front row seat to Midge’s big break. In the present timeline, Midge becomes the first and only “girl writer” at a late night talk show, where fame and fortune loom on the other side of sexist indignities. Unlucky in love, resented by her adult children, and estranged from her manager turned bestie, future Midge is uber-successful, but uber-lonely. Maisel, global comedy superstar-and learn the excruciating costs of fame. An audacious flash-forward device sends the story decades into the future, where we encounter Mrs.
Maisel finally takes a long, hard look at its inimitable heroine, warts and all. But in its Season Five swan song, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel have found their frustrating title character too cute by half (remember when she outed a queer Black man and the series shrugged?). The rest of the list should pass your inspection-here are the best shows of the year so far. And yours truly is a staunch defender of Hijack's legitimate candidacy for the show of the summer title. Plus, we're reeling from the return of What We Do In the Shadows, which was so damn good that we couldn't leave it out. Of course, Foundation's brilliant new season was enough to land our good friend Lee Pace on this list.

Anyway, I know better than to doubt our Books and Fiction Editor, Adrienne Westenfeld, when it comes to Star Trek, or TV adaptations of great Victorian novels. This time, thankfully, the battle wasn't too contentious-we've only added five shows to this latest update. So, once again, it felt like time for Esquire's entertainment editors to convene to decide the best shows of the year so far. We're over halfway through the year, which-in TV time, with the boatloads of shows we're delivered each and every day-amounts to about a decade.
